Periostat is the only oral medication approved for treating the host response production of tissue destroying enzymes in periodontal disease - periodontitis. Gingivitis is the early stages of periodontal disease while periodontitis is more advanced. Periodontitis is caused by multiple factors: initiated by the formation of bacteria, plaque, calculus but the destruction and loss of teeth is due to the tissue destroying enzymes, collagenases, produced by the body. Periostat is the FIRST and ONLY FDA-approved oral medication used in conjunction with scaling and root planing at your dentist office to treat periodontitis. Scaling and root planing is a mechanical procedure to remove the bacteria around the teeth structure, while Periostat is a systemic treatment which targets the overproduction of tissue-destroying enzymes in response to the bacteria.
