WHAT IS SCABIES?
Scabies is a highly-contagious itchy skin condition caused by a microscopic mite (Sarcoptes scabiei) that is passed strictly by skin-to-skin contact between people.   Every year, 300 million people are affected by this parasite worldwide.
HOW DO YOU GET SCABIES?
You can only catch scabies by very close skin-to-skin contact. Close physical contact such as hugging can transmit the mite and usually many members of a family are infected.  Sexual contact is on of the most common forms of transmission among sexually active young people. The mite is very sensitive to environment and can not live off a host body for more than 24-36 hours.  You can not contact scabies for a dog or cat.
WHAT DOES SCABIES LOOK LIKE?
Scabies produces a skin rash, and it first presents as widespread and overwhelming itching before there is any rash.  The rash develops as a result of scratching and part as an allergic reatioin produced by the body in response to the infection.  The resultant skin rash is composed of small red bumps and blisters.  The scabies actually seek out cooler areas of the body to live and the rash most commonly affects the webs between the fingres, the wrists and the backs of the elbows, knees and around the waist and umbilicus, axillary folds, areas around the nipples, sides and back of the feet, the genital area and buttocks.
WHAT DOES SCABIES FEEL LIKE?
Symptoms of itching begin approximately 30 days after exposure. Therefore it is crucial that all family members be treated at the same time, even if they do not exhibit symptoms.  When symptoms develop, the itching is relentless and pervasive and typically worse at night and increases in intensity.  What distinguishes the itch of scabies, from other skin conditions, is its relentless quality that will get so intense to prevent sleep or awaken the inflicted in the middle of the night.
WHAT IS ELIMITE CREAM  & HOW DOES IT WORK?
Elimite 5% cream (Permethrin) is a topical scabicidal agent manufactured by Allergan.  It is for topical use only.   Only one application is necessary to compoetely eliminate the parasites. This is a prescription medication and it should be used exactly as directed, nor more quantity nor more often than directed
HOW DO I USE ELIMITE CREAM?
The cream is applied topically only one time.   It applied from the neck all the way down to the soles of the feet being careful to apply in the web areas between fingers and toes and in skin folds. Apply before bedtime and leave on 8 - 14 hours.   Wash it off in the shower or bath.  Usually 30 grams is sufficient for an average adult.
COMPLETE PROTOCOL TO ERADICATE SABIES INVESTATION:
  1. Since scabies infestation is asymptomatic for the first weeks, all family members and close intimate contacts need to be treated.
  2. All clothing worn the prevsious day, pajamas, bedding, etc must be washed.  Dry the launddry for an hour in a hot dryer.
  3. Any unwashable items must be placed in a pastic bag for 2 weeks.  The eggs hatch in 10 days, but the scabies mite can not live away from  a human host skin for more than 24 hours.
  4. Scabies do not live in carpeting or furniture; they are slow moving and have no wings and can not jump like fleas.
  5. Pets can not get human scabies and do not need to be treated.
HOW QUICKLY DO I FEEL RELIEF AFTER TREATMENT WITH ELIMITE?
Although only one application of Elimite cream is effective and curative, the symptoms of itching continue up to 6 weeks following treatment.  The mites are long dead and the infection is eliminated although the itching continues.    Do misinterpret this itching as continued manifestation of mites and try repeated treatments with Elimite or other scabies treatments.  This will on cause enormous skin irritation.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO USE ELIMITE CREAM?
Elimite cream is only applied ONCE!  One application completely kills and irradicates the mite.  Symptoms and itching may not disappear for weeks.  Do NOT reapply cream or use other scabies treatment.  Soaking in cool water or applying a cool, wet washcloth to the irritated areas of your skin may minimize itching.   A soothing lotion such as Calamine lotion can be applied.   You can also use over-the-counter antihistamines to relieve the allergic symptoms caused by scabies.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ELIMITE?
Elimite treatment may temporarily exacerbate the itching, redness and edema accompany scabies infestation.  Also after the application of the Elimite itching, mild burning and/or stinging may occur.  The intensity of these side effects may also be directly associated withthe severity of the actual infection.
